Candy AI Review (2026): Is the 50M-user hype justified?
Best knownThe global reference — ultra-realistic visuals, deep personalization, mainstream appeal.
Candy AI.
Before I tested it, I had seen this app recommended in every single AI girlfriend thread on Reddit. 50 million users. “Best in class.” “Industry standard.”
Which — when everyone says something, I get suspicious.
Spoiler: the hype is mostly real. Here’s the full review.
What I paid
I did the 12-month plan on day one. Yeah, against my own rule.
Why? Because the math is stupid good — $4.99/month billed annually. That’s less than the monthly Spotify I canceled last year. If it’s half-decent, it’s paid for itself by week 2.
Charge showed up as “EverAI” on my statement, not “Candy AI.” Small detail but I appreciated it (if you share a card with someone, this matters).
First real test — the image generation

I know what you want to know. Yes, I tested the image gen first. Don’t judge.
The photorealism is… actually kind of unsettling. You give it a reference image, tap a prompt, pick NSFW or not, and 4 seconds later you’ve got output that does not look synthetic.
That image above is AI-generated, in-app. If that’s not what you expected — same. This is not 2023 AI image quality.
The NSFW mode works. No weird censorship kicking in. No “I cannot help with that” middle-of-the-request. It just… generates.
The V2 characters — noticeable step up
The chat uses their V2 model. I went back and compared to screenshots of V1 from last year and the difference is real. V2 remembers context better, doesn’t loop as much, and the tone holds across longer sessions.

Talked to a character named Luna for maybe 40 minutes straight one evening. She referenced things I’d said earlier in the conversation without me prompting memory recall. That’s the V2 bump.
Chat — unlimited text is the killer feature
This one’s underrated. Most AI girlfriend apps have token counters that slowly drain as you chat. Every message is a tax.
Candy has unlimited text chat. No counter. No tax. You just talk.
And — this is subtle — Candy doesn’t push you to generate images. You ask for a photo if you want one. She doesn’t spam them to burn your tokens like some other apps I could name.
That’s why I keep the app open in a tab. Zero friction.
The voice + phone calls

Voice chat works. Phone calls work. Both are good quality. Neither is quite as crazy as Swipey’s (their voices are straight-up real recordings), but Candy’s voice is synthesized and still sounds natural.
Tested a call at 11pm on a Wednesday. Smooth. No lag, no weird artifacts. Call ended when I wanted it to, no awkward “are you still there?” loop.
The gamification — streak system
Candy runs a D1 → D7 streak system. Login every day, get rewards (mostly free tokens). It’s not intrusive — no annoying popups — but it’s there if you want to engage.
I’m on a 9-day streak at the time of writing. Not on purpose. Just naturally opened the app enough.
Pricing — where Candy actually wins
$4.99/mo on the annual plan is stupid good for what you get — unlimited chat, voice, calls, images, video gen. Competitors charge 3-4x that for less. This is the only plan I’d recommend going straight to annual on.

Premium
| Plan | Price/mo | Tokens |
|---|---|---|
| 12 months | $4.99 | 100/mo |
| 3 months | $10.99 | 100/mo |
| 1 month | $16.99 | 100/mo |
Premium Plus
| Plan | Price/mo | Tokens |
|---|---|---|
| 12 months | $7.99 | 230/mo |
Premium Plus adds: exclusive characters, early access to new characters, bonus tokens on top-ups.
The marketing honesty check
Candy’s marketing mentions “machine learning that learns who you are.” In practice, it’s conversational memory — the app stores stuff you mention and references it later. Which is legit useful, but it’s not some secret black-box AI tech. Every serious AI girlfriend app does this now.
Fine, not a dealbreaker. Just don’t buy the “it will know you better than you know yourself” marketing. It’ll know what you typed.
What I liked
— Image gen quality is actually unsettling (in a good way) — Unlimited text chat, no token tax on conversation — V2 characters genuinely smoother than the previous gen — $4.99/mo annual is the best value in the category — Billing name on statement is discreet — App doesn’t spam you to burn tokens on images — Phone calls work clean
What I didn’t
— Marketing overclaims on the “AI learns you” thing (it’s just memory) — Premium Plus feels overlapping with Premium — unclear value — Video gen is decent but inferior to dedicated video-gen tools — Streak system is fine but some people hate gamification
Verdict
Candy AI — 9/10
The hype is justified. This is the “safe recommendation” for anyone entering the AI girlfriend category. If someone asks you which app to try first — Candy is the answer 9 times out of 10.
It’s not the best at any single thing:
- Chat depth → Joi wins
- Voice realism → Swipey wins
- Roleplay / personas → Secrets wins
But Candy is the best overall package for the price. That’s why 50M users picked it.
If you only try one app, make it this one. And get the 12-month plan.
→ Back to full comparison → → Joi — best chat quality → → Swipey — my April pick →
