Be whoever you want. Build whatever you want.
That’s the Janitor AI motto. And honestly — it sums up pretty well what makes this platform unique in the AI girlfriend world.
It’s also where I started. Before love-pixel.com, before the tests, before the comparisons — there was Janitor AI. It’s where I discovered what conversational AIs could actually do when given some freedom.
So yes — I’m talking about it. And no — I don’t get any commission on this. It’s purely editorial.
What it actually is
Janitor AI is a roleplay and AI character platform with more than 15 million active users. Community-created characters — thousands, in every style imaginable.
Male POV, female POV. Romantic, erotic, unapologetic NSFW. Religious, philosophical. Non-binary, monster, elf, medieval RPG, submissive, dominant. Sci-fi, horror, comedy.
The least you can say is it’s vast. Very vast.
And unlike a lot of platforms that claim freedom while censoring at the smallest spicy request — Janitor AI owns what it is. An adult platform that lets users build and live the stories they want.

What’s free — actually
Janitor AI developed its own language model — JanitorLLM, currently in Beta.
This model is totally free and unlimited. No external API key needed, no message limit, and it accepts NSFW content without a filter.
That’s rare. And it’s honest to say clearly.
The nuance — since it’s a beta, the model is sometimes less precise or coherent than the big commercial models. Bugs, replies going off the rails on long conversations. Nothing dealbreaking but you feel it.
For those who want more quality — Janitor AI lets you connect your own external API key (Claude, GPT-4 via OpenRouter). There the quality goes up significantly, but it becomes paid depending on your use.

The real limits
Let’s be clear about what Janitor AI isn’t.
No voice. No generated images. No video. No calls. No immersive visual interface with an animated character.
To live your story on Janitor AI — you’ll have to read and write it yourself. Pure text. Narrative roleplay. Like an interactive book where you’re co-author.
That’s a real limit if you’re looking for a visual or vocal experience. It’s also what makes it unique if you’re looking for narrative depth and imagination.
How to find your way around
All characters aren’t equal — far from it. Some are really well-built with a real personality, real coherence in replies. Others are hollow, badly configured, disappointing from the first exchanges.
You’ll have to filter. Dig a little. Read character descriptions before jumping in.
Search tags help — you can filter by genre, style, content level. But it stays a community platform with the uneven quality that implies.
My advice — start with the best-rated characters in the category that interests you. Community votes are a good quality indicator.
Who it’s for
For curious people who want to discover the AI universe without spending a dime. For text roleplay and collaborative writing fans. For those looking for total freedom in an unfiltered creative space.
Not necessarily for those who want a turnkey experience, visual, with a character that speaks and generates photos. For that — the apps in our comparison are better suited.
